Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Fagor 670040230 Stainless-Steel 3-in-1 6-Quart Multi-CookerCustomer Review: Great 3-in-1 cooker. Excellent helper Summary: 5 Stars
I have the Fagor stove top pressure cooker, and thought of getting a slow cooker. I also have a 5 year old Tiger Rice cooker which still works well. But with limited counter space, I wish I can combine some of these items.
The Fagor 3-in-1 multicooker is amazing. I tested all the functions and am pleased to report that all functions work well above expectation. Despite some reviewer complaining about the lower pressure cooker at 9psi, I did not have to adjust my usual recipe. The size of the cooker is about the same size as my 10 cup rice cooker and fits under the counter.
Pros
1. Browning function is great - i do not need to use the stovetop to brown and I could just continue the cooking in the multicooker itself. The heat is comparable to "high" setting on my electric stove. Enough to brown garlic and even boil soup. To speed up the cooking process, I sometimes use the browning function to boil the contents before pressure cooking or slow cooking.
2. Pressure cooker - works well. I use it to pressure steam chicken essence, vegetable, cook pork ribs. (Boil ribs and remove scums, then pressure cook high 15 mins (2/3 liquid), leave it on at Warm function, no need to release pressure and after 2 hours - the meat literally fall off the ribs). After the pressure cooking is done, the cooker switches to a "warm" function and pressure is slowly release without any sizzling sound. However, if your recipe calls for quick release, you can turn the quick release knob to do that. I would recommend maybe adding one more minute to compensate for the lower PSi. For any pressure cooking, you need at least 8oz of water (about a soda can)
3. Rice Cooker - the 6 quart size is equivalent to a 10 cup size rice cooker. It's non stick. I wish Fagor had included a rice scooper so that I need not look for one. The white rice cooks in 6 mins under "pressure" cooking mode. (Turn the knob to pressure instead of steam). For brown rice, slightly longer. The recipe book comes in handy for all the cooking times. After the rice is cooker, it will turn into Warm function.
4. Slow Cooker - As a slow cooker - I love the delay function. You can delay cooking up to 8 hours and slow cook under high or low mode for up to 9.5 hours. After it's cooked, it will beep once to remind you and then turn into "Warm" function. I have made stock and stews with it. The size of the pots is just nice for family of 4. Note - you should never fill up beyond the 2/3 marking as indicated on the pot.
The exterior is very appealing - brushed stainless steel. Cool to touch even while cooking. The simple digital control is easy to manage even without reading the manual. The only thing you need to note - for pressure cooking - turn the knob to pressure, for rice cooking - knob is at pressure. BUT for SLOW Cooking - knob is at STEAM.
Cons - No cons - but areas of improvement
1. The pot has no handle. So after browning the meat and if you need to pour out liquid etc, it might be a challenge to hold the pot without gloves.
2. No Trivet included. So for steaming function, you would need to buy the Chefn sillicon trivet (8") to use it.
3. No rice scoop included.
4. I am used to the yellow indicator that pops up to show that pressure has been reached when using the stovetop version of the pressure cooker. There's a pressure valve however, that's functional and does not have any indicator to show that pressure has been reached. However, since this is digitally programmed, it will only start to count down from the time the pressure has been reached. So it really should not bother me.
5. It will be great if Fagor can include a glass cover or any cover for the pot. After cooking, the leftovers can be just covered up with a lid and put in the fridge. I happen to have a Caphalon steel cover that fits perfectly but I am worried about scratches. Also - sometimes, when I brown / boil the stew before slow cooking it, it's great to cover the pot with a lid to quicken the cooking process.
Overall, I love this item. For the price, it is worth every penny. I think it can literally replace the stove except you can fry an egg easily in it :)
